Watch the match highlights (now in HD) between TP and SP. This exciting match took a turn only in the final quarter as TP turned up the heat on their rivals to claim the championship.
Hi, I’m Mabel, the current outgoing Captain of NTU IVP Badminton Women’s Team for the 09/10 season. I’m currently in my third year of study, majoring in Aerospace Engineering, and I’m undergoing my Industrial Attachment this semester.
2. For the benefit of our readers, would you tell us some background about the IVP Badminton in general as well as NTU’s past achievements?
The annual IVP Badminton Games are usually held in mid-January, lasting for two weeks. For the last 5 seasons, the NTU Men’s and Women’s Teams have always maintained a top-3 showing at the Games, including 2 championship titles each. This year, we were very pleased to regain the Women’s Team championship title, while our Men’s team proved themselves to be strong opposition against the teams from SIM and TP.
3. Were you confident of winning the IVP after a strong performance in the Cheers Post Secondary Team Championship 2010?
We did not weigh our chances judging from the Cheers tournament performance, because it was held much earlier than the IVP games. Moreover, it was a mixed team event. The Cheers tournament was mainly an opportunity for our players to gain tournament experience and exposure. In comparison, we knew we would be facing equal if not stronger opposition in the IVP games, and that was something we always kept in mind.
4. What was the strategy against NUS?
There wasn’t any distinct strategy besides the fact that we were very much familiar with the NUS players. We knew that the chances of beating them would be increased as long as our players performed to the best of their abilities on court. Fortunately, we managed to fulfill that to an extent.
5. What were the challenges faced by the NTU Women’s Team?
A short pre-IVP training period coupled with individual personal commitments during the December holidays proved to be the toughest hurdles. At times, it was difficult to build up team camaraderie or gather opinions on team issues due to the lack of numbers.
6. After winning the IVP Games 2010, what is next for the Team?
Since half of our team will be graduating this July, the main focus at the start of the new academic year would be to recruit new players and work on integrating them into our team. Apart from the Cheers individual/team events, the IVP Games remain the biggest badminton competition for our team and we will be definitely be working hard towards the 2011 tournament.
7. Is there anything you would like to say to the NTU fans out there?
On behalf of my team, I would like to say thank you to all the NTU fans out there for your well-wishes and support. And to the fervent supporters who came down and made their presence felt in the huge ITE arena, it would not have been the same without you guys. We are proud to be able to finish strongly in this year’s IVP Games, and we want to share our achievement with you!
We interviewed Marcus, Captain of the NTU team after the match :
1. Please introduce yourself to our readers
I’m Marcus and am currently the IVP captain of NTU’s Men Volleyball team. I am from the school of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and currently, a third year student.
2. For the benefit of our readers, would you tell us some background about the IVP Volleyball in general as well as NTU past achievements
IVP Volleyball has been a feature of the local sports calendar during the month of January. This high level competition is one that we always try to do well in. The teams comprises of the 5 different polytechnics and the 4 universities, whereby they are placed in 2 groups. The top 2 teams from each group will then qualify for the semifinals. These are NTU’s achievements for the past 3 years.

3. What was your feeling after the IVP Final against Temasek Polytechnic?
We were disappointed to have lost 0-3 in the IVP final against TP. We tried our best but unfortunately, the better team collectively won.
4. The match was very intense even from the beginning. What was going through the team’s mind in the game?
Having played TP before in the group stages and lost narrowly 3-2 to them, the team was determined to learn from its past mistakes and put on a better performance. However we made far too many mistakes at crucial moments, which TP took advantage of.
5. What was the strategy against Temasek Polytechnic?
Our strategy was to make use of our height advantage to block TP’s attacks and rely on our powerful attacks to provide us a platform for victory.
6. What do you think was the greatest strength of the NTU Team?
The strengths in the team were making use of our height to aid us in blocking TP’s attacks and using our fast attacks from our quickers with the addition of added firepower from our open spikers.
7. What do you think was the greatest weakness of the NTU Team?
We need to improve on our reaction and in the setting up of our attacks.
8. What is your vision and goal for the NTU Team for 2010?
My vision and goal for the NTU team is for them to learn from these mistakes and grow stronger together as a team so that we can fulfill our potential in future competitions.
9. Is there anything you would like to say to the NTU fans out there?
I would just like to say thanks for those NTU fans that have come to watch our matches. We may not have won this time but we will be back stronger.
Here’s our post match interview with Serena, Captain of the NTU Women’s Floorball Team :
1. Please introduce yourself to Vox’s viewers
I’m Serena, 3rd year student from IEM (Information Engineering and Media), captain of IVP Floorball 09/10.
2. How long has the NTU Floorball Team train together? Are there any national players in the team and how many are there?
We’ve been training since August 2009, a month earlier than we used to after the intake of students.
Yes, there is 1 in the team. However, there are many others whom are experienced through league games and competitive trainings as well =)
3. Were there any challenges faced by the team this year?
Yes, of course. Each game was a challenge by itself because it’s never a predictable game. Teams get better, players get better, it’s rather hard to say that we’ll win right from the start. Even if we could, how well could we perform and play would be the next couple of questions.
4. This is the first year that the Women’s team claim the IVP Floorball titile. What is the secret this year?
Actually, this is the third that that the NTU women’s team has claimed the IVP Floorball title. It was last won 4 seasons ago. So you could say, it was a long time coming :)
As cliche as it might sound, it was all about TEAMWORK. Holistic teamwork to be exact. We couldn’t do it without each and everyone in the team. From game play to motivating and cheering each other during change of shift. It was nothing less than amazing. Not forgetting our coach, Alvin Tay, who have helped us right from the start, guiding us and improving our level of play, our sports officer Louise Khng who has been there for us all the time, giving valuable feedback during games. None of this could have happened without each and everyone involved
5. The team was leading 5 -- 0 in the first quarter, what was going through the team’s mind at that point in time?
**first period 2-0, second period 5-0, third period (2-1).. final result: 7-1
I thought it was a surprising scoreline. We had expected a tough match, judging from NUS’ results from other games they have played and their aggressive play as well. In fact, we had a lot of thoughts about how they would be playing. Looking at the scoreline of 5-0, it was definitely an awesome feeling that we managed to obtain such a lead and that didn’t stop us from wanting more.. We took the game period by period and we played well as the game progressed.
6. What strategy was adopted to maintain the lead until the final whistle?
“Play like Champions, Win like One”
7. After claiming the IVP Title, what is next for the team?
Perhaps to analyze what we did right and the mistakes we committed, bringing them forward as we train for the next IVP. For sure, we’ll be expected to retain the title and I foresee tougher trainings for us to come!
8. Anyone you would like to thank for the team’s achievement?
Alvin Tay (Coach) for bringing glory to the team, Louise Khng (Sports Officer) for the endless support and help towards the team, Vice-Captain Ain for helping me out throughout the season, each and every single player in the team who made the Gold possible, for all their effort from the start. Last but not least, to our supporters who never failed to cheer for us at all our games! It really meant a lot to us.
9. Is there anything you would like to say to the NTU die hard fans out there?
A big thank you for cheering us on, making time to watch our match(es). We hope you enjoyed watching our games. We’ll work hard to retain the title next year and would love to see you supporting us again! =)

This is the 7th year that the NTU Outdoor Adventure Club has embarked on the annual event, which aims to promote adventure racing to the amateurs, where they compete like a professional. “Not just a race, but also a social event”, the GD 2010 will be an enlargement to the local dragon boat race fixture. The highlight of this fun event will be for participating teams to challenge for honours with “horse boats” (these are dragon boats with a horse heads and horse tails). To begin with, it was truly heart-warming to see the Singaporean team of Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari clinch our first ever Super Series title in 20 years. When I was there, the atmosphere was electrifying and for once in a long while, I truly believe that Singapore sports is moving the right way and most importantly, we are moving forward. Many will argue that Yao and Shinta are hardly Singaporean in nature as one is a China native and the other from Indonesia. I beg to differ as they donned our Singapore flag nonetheless and competed with their hearts and a mental strength not seen in many Singaporean athletes in the recent past. We’ve started a glorious run by winning the World table tennis championships, beating the world champions China in their own domain. Today, we saw a new era of sporting excellence as we fought, clawed, shed tears and shed blood for the nation we so truly love and have come to call our home. After 20 long years, the Republic is once again placing ourselves in the global sporting arena as a force to be reckoned with.
Beautifully crafted and to the point, this article aims to inspire and challenge our young local athletes in becoming professional athletes. Read more to find out!

The All Stars steer away from defeat with a 1 goal advantage over the Aussies. Both teams display stunning performances, keeping each other on the run. However, All Stars strong possession in the game gives them the upper edge, resulting in a 13-12 win over the Aussies.
In this match, Skools Innebandy was clearly the team with more experience. With good control of the ball and precise scoring, Skools had greater possession of the ball throughout the match. But it was not totally a smooth ride for the defending champion, as NUS Nemesis displayed beautiful defence as well. Skools reciprocated their defence with cheeky dribbling and greater chemistry within the team. The spectacular match ended with Skools winning 12:4.
It was a close fight between Hurricanes and RP Salibandy, where both teams displayed great teamwork and beautiful passes. Hurricanes edged over RP Salibandy with their determination and cooperation within the team. A great match indeed!
Tampines Sports Hall – Facing the runner-up of Floorball League 2009 is not an easy task at all indeed, but NUS Saints put up a great fight against Merahans, never giving up and played great defence tactics throughout.
